The Pantheon

I've always wanted to make a painting like this after seeing the Pantheon a couple of years ago.  Not sure if it's quite finished yet, but I think it's getting there.

Do Your Worst

Had some time for another sketch today.  Was listening to a few songs from Les Mis and felt like painting a dual.

Movie Posters

For our wedding in May, we had our reception at the great Fox Theatre in downtown Redwood City. Since we could take over the marquee and the poster windows with our own work, we decided to make our own movie posters!

Working with our photographer, Khoa from Kandid Light, his crew took photos of us that tried to match the poses of the original posters - to give us a starting point. Then I either added some adjustments, or heavily painted on top of our photos as in the Harry Potter one below. As you can imagine, it was a blast to work on these. Here's just 4 of the 10 we ended up doing. Enjoy!

Portrait of a Goat Warrior

This one might have some lighting inspiration from Skyrim. I'm sure enjoying that game! I'm wanting to refine this one at some point too, but since it's Friday...Enjoy!

Portrait of an Elf

This is a work in progress for a personal project of mine, but I thought it'd be fun to share how it's coming along.

"Piano Fantasy" by William Joseph

(Make sure to up these new videos to 720p to watch them in HD). This piece is such a blast to play, and I thought it'd be fun to use the new GoPro to give you guys a fun perspective on what it looks like to play it. Enjoy!

Goodwin Canyon Footage

Here's the section of river that inspired the painting two posts down. It was so much fun.

Goodwin Canyon

Had some time today for a lunchtime sketch of yesterday's AMAZING rafting trip down a class IV+ river. We were one of three rafts that day, and the other two both flipped at different points. Luckily we just had one person bounce out of our raft. Not bad considering the level of the river. 2200 cfs!! They only need 600 cfs to run that river, so it was really rolling. If you're near the Bay Area, check out All Outdoors Rafting...they have such a great crew and equipment. I can't wait to go again. All Outdoors Rafting

Snarling Bear

I just found out about Sculptris last week, which is basically a free streamlined version of ZBrush. Here's an hours worth of work during lunchtime on this character. I can't wait to do more!

Dreamscape - WIP

Happy New Year!

I finally got a little sketching in during a lunch break. Still in progress, but I'm liking where it's headed. Over at CG Society, I haven't entered one of their challenges since the Grand Space Opera one a few years ago, so I think I might finish this one up and submit it for this year's theme. Hopefully I can steal enough time for it.

Anyway, I hope you're all doing well. Cheers!

Elevator, the Musical

Today I'm very excited to debut a fun short film some colleagues and I have been working on during our spare time. Each year at DreamWorks there's a LoTech Cinema Contest, and this year's theme was to create an original musical. Well, a group of us decided to ask the question, "Do you ever wonder what someone else is thinking when you walk into an elevator?"

Original music written and performed by myself, with lead vocals by Cara Malek, Mariana Galindo, and Nick Lupinetti. Directed by myself, Cliff Mitchell, and Adrian Tsang.

Enjoy!

Foreign Land

A deep sea coral environment was the inspiration for this one. Going for an alien feel, yet inviting. Like you just want to do some exploring. Enjoy!

Watch Your Back

Ever since getting into target archery, I thought it'd be fun to sketch a scene like this.

la valse d'Amélie

I'm really looking forward to sharing more piano pieces with you all. So let's start off with a favorite of mine, the waltz from the movie, Amelie, by Yann Tierson. If you have any recommendations, feel free to leave a suggestion in the comments! Enjoy!

Scotland

Last weekend I had the wonderful pleasure of taking a class with Camille Przewodek, an amazing plein-aire colorist who lives up in Petaluma, CA. After painting in oils all day, I had to come home and try out some of the concepts with a digital canvas, so I painted up this image of one of my favorite places.

Twilight

I think cliffs and oceans might be my favorite thing to paint. There's just something about it.

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

After searching for some reference of forests online for my work on MegaMind, I stumbled on some amazing photographs of Angkor Wat. So with a few of them up, I came up with this fun sketch during a few breaks.

Thursday, January 28, 2010

Painting these portraits is just too much fun. I had to do another today.

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Another quick design for fun.

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Using an alligator and a snapping turtle as the main reference for this, I took a still from 'Tristan and Isolde', and painted up a possible prosthetic design. The challenge was trying to maintain the facial expression and keep it within the look and feel of the film. Had a bit of fun with it.

Here's a new concept that's still very much in progress. I'll post the finished one probably next week. After visiting Ireland and Scotland a few years ago, I've been wanting to do a piece that captures some of the grand cliffscapes you see in those parts while pushing it just over the fantasy line to make it more interesting. I hope you enjoy it.

Today's lunchtime sketch - trying to capture what it was like on that windy day in Tennessee Valley.

Decided to revisit this one. Enjoy!

Fallen

The idea for this painting came to me after a few hours of playing Dragon Age: Origins. And perhaps with the Renn-Faire fresh on my mind as well, I thought it'd be fun to do a piece like this. It's still very rough...but I think it's far enough along to share with you all.

Enjoy! And have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Another lunch thumbnail...kind of in the same world as the one below.

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Did this one during lunch today.
Another exploration done for fun.
I really enjoy smudging paint around and having fun with textures. I thought this would make for an interesting area for a character to explore in a game like Shadow of the Collossus.

Wanted to give you guys something new. This one's an hour and a half speedpaint from the ol' imagination. There's certainly a lot of issues with it, but I'll get to those later.

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

Hey folks! Check out Issue 56 of Advanced Photoshop, hitting the shelves here in May for an extensive feature on matte-painting. Advanced Photoshop was kind enough to have me share some of my knowledge on the subject, so if you're into utilizing photographs into your artwork, or want to achieve a more believable sense of realism, I definitely recommend checking it out.

Also, if you want to see more about how I made the image above - feel free to check out a more in-depth process on my website: http://www.metavisuals.com/Matte/Dubrovnik.html

I had some fun doing a scene study recently - Pausing Raiders of the Lost Ark on my laptop, and painting from scratch the different panels on my computer. The city ones are from King Kong and Die Hard 3.
